Alter Ego

biography

Since its foundation in 1991, the ensemble Alter Ego has performed in the most prestigious venues and festivals of contemporary music across the world.

But the main feature of Alter Ego is its continuous collaboration with artists belonging to different artistic experiences: electronic musicians (Deathprod, Philip Jeck, Matmos, Pan Sonic, Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner), pop singers (John De Leo, Frankie HI-NRG), visual artists (D-Fuse, Andrew Hooker, Michelangelo Pistoletto), actors (Vladimir Luxuria), performers (Irvine Arditti, David Moss, Neue Vocalsolisten).

Alter Ego works in close collaboration with composers such as Louis Andriessen, Gavin Bryars, Alvin Curran (worldwide premiere for Alter Ego and Frankie HI-NRG), Philip Glass (European premiere at Settembre Musica Festival 2002 in Turin of 600 Lines, an inedited opera of the 1968 that Glass gave Alter Ego with an European exclusive), Jonathan Harvey, Toshio Hosokawa, Giya Kancheli, Bernhard Lang, David Lang (in residence at the 36th Nuova Consonanza Festival), Alvin Lucier,  Terry Riley (worldwide premiere of The slaving wheel of meat conception, commissioned by Romaeuropa Festival and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, with the participation of Matmos and Riley himself playing the piano), Frederic Rzewski (worldwide premiere of Main Drag for RAI Radio 3), Kaija Saariaho, Laszlo Sáry, Salvatore Sciarrino, Jōji Yuasa...

In 2004, an Alter Ego Festival titled COMETODADDY took place in Milano at the Auditorium with international artists and the collaboration of the Milan Symphonic Orchestra.

In 2005 Alter Ego presented a new version of Gavin Bryars’s The Sinking of the Titanic at the Biennale Musica in Venice with the participation of the composer playing the double bass,  Philip Jeck and an original video of Andrew Hooker. This new version of The Sinking of the Titanic has been recorded for Touch Music with unanimous acclaim from the press.

In 2006 Alter Ego realized a new project called MICROWAVES with the Finnish electronic Duo Pan Sonic and the collaboration of the composers Atli Ingolfsson, Yan Maresz, Riccardo Nova and Giovanni Verrando, co-produced by six international festivals (Stockholm New Music, MaerzMusik, Festival Archipel, Ircam, Holland Festival, Romaeuropa Festival). MICROWAVES has also been presented at the Ultima Festival in Oslo, Wien Modern, Gaida Festival, Huddersfield Festival, Nous Sons in Barcelona, Taktlos in Bern, Musica Electronica Nova in Wroclaw…

In the last seasons Alter Ego started a regular collaboration with Auditorium Fondazione Musica per Roma.

Over the last years Alter Ego consolidated its artistic collaboration with the label Stradivarius, for which they recorded a collection of monographic CDs: Philip Glass (recently reprinted on a double CD by the Glass’s label OrangeMountainMusic), Claude Lenners, Frederic Rzewski, Nicola Sani, Salvatore Sciarrino (Esplorazione del Bianco, Fiato), that received unanimous critical and audience acclaim.

The CD Music in the Shape of a Square by Philip Glass won the prestigious Editor’s Choice of the English magazine Gramophone.
