Sascha Goetzel & Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic at the PROMS

Sascha Goetzel & Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic at the PROMS

Sascha Goetzel & Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic at the PROMS

From the second Sascha Goetzel walked on stage ...we knew we were in for a treat of a concert. He’s one of those magical conductors who ooze charisma – you can see him connecting with every single member of the orchestra, pulling in the audience to come along with them for the ride. He also conducted most pieces last night from memory which, for me, puts him in the conductors' top set class along with Daniel Barenboim (there are many others, of course, but Goetzel and Barenboim are now my current favourites).

Excitement is also conveyed by the image sequence in Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov's "Scheherazade", that Sascha Goetzel’s theatrically elegant conductor stick doesn’t treat like a hot thriller ready to explode, but rather ensures melodic flexibility and structured contours. Nothing sounds blunt or generalized even during the violent crash of the shipwreck.

The program was selected for panache, dynamism, dance, and was performed also in that spirit, it downright ignited like a firework. A wonderful advertisement for more unusual choices. The fact that, in music, ecstasy requires the greatest discipline was apparent in every aspect of this orchestra, and it also showed a friendly but decided leading conductor.

With youthful freshness, the listeners were abducted to the lively world of the twenties with a selection from "Ogelala", an antique Mexican Original by the German composer Erwin Schulhoff. Goetzel developed this extroverted ballet mystery with opulent sound surfaces by the large ensemble orchestra (about 100 musicians) and distinctive rhythms (nine percussionists).

Goetzel animated the Turkish orchestra to absolute precision. He has raised the artistic level of the orchestra considerably since 2008.

The Viennese conductor Sascha Goetzel, who has already been very successful at the Staatsoper, was invited for the first time to the “Konzerthaus” with his Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra and was celebrated by an enthusiastic audience for an exciting, energetic, boldly programmed, sensitive as well as dramatic, musical concert.

Vienna Staatsoper, Le Nozze di Figaro

This native of Vienna created a Mozart which was fresh, vital, yet always nuanced, unbelievably colorful, and was an excellent partner for the singers.

Goetzel evidently trains as well as inspires his players, over 90% of whom are Turkish. Their average age is around 40, and the orchestra itself, growing out of an existing chamber orchestra, only gave its first concert in 1999, supported by the Turkish steel pipe manufacturers Borusan Holding. Already the strings are warm-toned and secure, the woodwind and brass outstanding, as their recently released disc of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade demonstrates.  Watch this uplifting concert on BBC4 on Sunday 31 August.

This was a classy, enthusiastic ensemble and Sascha Goetzel the consummate showman at this Middle East-inspired evening.  A group of works from the 19th and early 20th centuries showcased Goetzel's fine sense of orchestral colour and the virtuosity of the BIPO's playing.

Sascha Goetzel & Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic at the PROMS

Here was a boldly colourful concert by the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, the first to visit the Proms from Turkey....Best in this big hall was the suite from Respighi’s ballet Belkis, Queen of Sheba, as glamorously over-the-top as any vintage Hollywood soundtrack to a biblical epic, and the Turkish musicians under their charismatic conductor, Sascha Goetzel, gave it their all.
